Laptop Battery Problems Sometimes Caused by Bad Battery

February 21, 2010

With all the recent (proven groundless by Microsoft) talk about Windows 7 harming laptop batteries, I ran into an issue recently where a battery in a dv6000 HP laptop would not charge. I was inclined to believe that the problem was in the laptop as I had just replaced the battery. However, after installing a replacement battery from the discount seller from which I had purchased the original replacement battery, I had no further problems. Sometimes a bad battery is cause by… a bad battery.

I learned a few other things as well:

  • HP will extend your warranty and associated tech support for an extra year for $129 (even if your laptop is out of warranty).
  • The HP Battery check software is only supposed to work with the laptop unplugged (although even then its reliability is sketchy),
