MPFilter.Sys Blue Screen of Death Crash

June 21, 2010

I started my computer this morning after a 56 hour power outage only to discover that immediately after entering my password, it would crash with a blue screen of death (BSOD) identifying MPFilter.SYS as the culprit. A Google search revealed that this file seems to be part of Microsoft Security Essentials, so that suggested that no driver update was going to fix the problem. I booted with the Windows 7 Upgrade CD and went to the repair options.

An automatic attempt to repair boot up problems revealed no issues so I tried to restore the system to a point before a series of windows updates last week. That did the trick and I am now writing this entry on the problem machine.

Next I’ll try running a complete scan of the system with Microsoft Security Essentials, then try reinstalling the updates to see if the problem recurs.
